The first six months are the "main growth phase". They require high quality protein and nutrients.

The next 6- 12 months require a reduced protein content to help prevent any growth disorders.

Now fully grown, finding the right diet to match their energy requirements is key.

Now in old age, diets with a lower fat and phosphorus are needed.

DOG’S MAKE THE BEST DATES!

Who will be your valentine?

No sooner had the festive stuff disappeared from our high streets then they seemed to be flooded with the romantic merchandise of Valentines’ Day! Love it or hate it, there is no escaping the day and with statistics suggesting that over 45% of dog owners buy their dog a Valentines’ gift and our American friends set to spend over $815M on their pets this Valentines’ Day, there is little wonder that businesses are capitalising on us being a nation of dog lovers! Here at the Happy Dog office we pondered it all (with our tongues firmly in our cheeks!) and after a little healthy debating decided that on Valentines’ Day it is quite probable that dogs make the best dates! So, if you are tired of disastrous dates with humans, think of it this way!
  • Dog’s don’t talk! Say no more!
  • As a dog lover you will never need to dream up some elaborate plan of excuses to get rid of a dog, as you would unwanted human attention!
  • The adoring look that your dog gives you as he follows you around is cute – the same from a human is not!
  • You will never ever (and indeed shouldn’t) share your dessert or chocolates with a dog!

Our thoughts also turned to giving Valentines gifts to our canine friends, but oh! What could we get them?! At the risk of the list sounding like an episode of the 80’s hit TV show ‘The Generation Game’, we thought of making a heart shaped wreath from dog biscuits, a dog friendly cuddly toy, a heart shaped ID tag, some collar bling or a pamper package at the Groomers to make sure your dog is well turned out for your date together! So this Valentines’ Day, why not ditch the flowers, chocolates and manufactured romance and simply snuggle up with your most faithful friend. Grab a blanket each, turn up the heating and watch the best dog films ever – Turner and Hooch, Beethoven, Marley and Me and Disney classics Lady and the Tramp and 101 Dalmatians are some of our favourites! Just have the tissues at the ready and be prepared for your dog talking to the TV as he sees strange dogs in his living room! Why not get the a simple Natural Antler Dog Chew as a little healthy snack whilst you tuck into some pop corn. Check them out here: Natural Antler Dog Chew
